Egypt Demonstrations

Advice and Information for Travellers

Summary: The FCO has declared Egypt safe for travel following the recent demonstrations. However, travellers are still cautioned to avoid public gatherings and respect the national curfew. See more advice below:

Observe Instructions by Local Authorities

The FCO highly recommends that British nationals follow instructions by local security authorities and avoid any form of public disturbance, as the situation could change at any time.

Respect the Curfew

Travellers to Egypt should respect the national curfew - from 00:00 to 06:00 local time - and listen for any announcements of a change to the curfew. Please note however, that no curfew is in place for the Red Sea Resort area and Luxor.

Talk to your Tour Operator

British Nationals planning to travel to Egypt should stay updated on the situation with their tour operators - they will offer the best advice on whether you should postpone your trip at any time.

While the majority of Egypt is calm - including Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea Resorts, Sharm el Sheikh and the other Red Sea Resorts - the situation in Cairo, Alexandria and Suez could change at any time.

Stay Updated on the Situation

Monitor the media to find out which areas provide easy travel through Egypt. Currently, the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza is open daily from 10:00 to 16:00 for special cases only. There are no travel restrictions in place for the rest of the country and the Suez Canal is operating normally.

Consular Assistance

The Consular Sections of the British Embassy in Cairo and Alexander are operating as normal. Normal counter hours apply. Call the Cairo Embassy on (002) (02) 2791 6000 for more information.

Please see the FCO's advice on Egypt for regularly-updated travel advice.

What Led to the Current Precautions?

A string of anti-government protests took place across Egypt's main cities following the Tunisia demonstrations earlier this year. They resulted in a number of deaths. At the end of January, the FCO advised against all but essential travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez. However, the situation in Egypt has since improved, following President Mubarak's resignation, and the FCO has since relaxed the travel restrictions to only caution British travellers to avoid demonstrations and respect curfews.
