ESTA For Holidays in the USA

Advice and information

As of the 9th of September 2010, anyone wishing to enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program is required to pay $14 (£9) for the ESTA application. The ESTA is valid for 2 years and allows for multiple visits to the U.S.

What is ESTA?

The Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) is an effort headed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to assess incoming travellers and determine if they are eligible for entry to the U.S. The ESTA replaced the green I-94 card which travellers were required to fill in on their flight into the United States.

Who will be affected?

The U.S. have grated Visa Waiver Status to 36 countries. Citizens of these countries may visit for business or tourism purposes for 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. Therefore any travellers from said countries who wishes to visit the U.S., visa free, will have to submit an ESTA form.

How do I apply?

By visiting the ESTA website or the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Protection. You will need to include your name, date of birth, passport details and travel information. This form can only be filled out online. Should you not have internet access, a third party (relative or travel agent) is allowed to do so for you. Payment options are limited to the following credit and debit cards:

  • Mastercard
  • Visa
  • American Express
  • Discover

When should I apply?

You must complete an ESTA application form at least 72 hours before flying.

What if I don't have ESTA approval before I travel?

You will not be granted permission to enter the United States. All VWP travellers are required by law to obtain authorisation prior to travel. Should you be disallowed entry because of a rejected ESTA application or because you do not hold the correct travel documents you will not be covered by your travel insurance policy.
