Travel Advice: Kenya Demonstrations

2 August 2010

On Wednesday, 4 August 2010, Kenya will hold a constitutional referendum to garner public opinion on a proposed new constitution. This referendum is expected to lead to public demonstrations which pose a potential danger to the public in certain regions.

Travellers should avoid the following hot spots as far as possible as those regarded as "outsiders" by the locals have recently been met with threats and increasing hostilities:

  • Nyanza Province: Kisumu East and Kuria.
  • Western Province: Mount Elgon.
  • Rift Valley Province: Trans Nzoia, Wareng, Tinderet, Kericho, Eldoret, Nakuru, Kuresoi, Kapenguria, Chepareria, Narok and Turbo.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has advised travellers heading to, and already in Kenya to do the following:

  • Be cautious and careful if you have to be around any rallies or demonstrations.
  • Keep an eye on the local news or media reports to stay ahead of any future demonstrations.
  • Should you require any assistance, contact the British High Commission in Nairobi.

What is being done?

15,000 police units have already been deployed across the Rift Valley. Furthermore, the Kenyan National Cohesion & Integration Commission has joined forces with the United Nations and PeaceNet to create the Uwiano coalition. Uwiano's aim is to closely monitor the fragile situation surrounding this referendum.

Members of the public can send a text message to 6397 to report any security threats.
