Travel Advice: Spanish Air Traffic Controllers Strike

It has been officially confirmed that the Spanish Union of Air Traffic Controllers (USCA) will strike on 18 August. The strike is expected to last for at least 3 or 4 days.

Alternative routes to Spain:

If you're planning on travelling to Spain, there are a number of alternative options available to you. These options include rail and ferry services. You may also be able to fly to a neighbouring country like Portugal so contact your airline directly about flight schedules and costs if you plan on doing so.

Ferries:

Brittany Ferries:

  • Santander (via Portsmouth) on Tues, Wed, Fri (journey takes 24 hours)
  • Santander (via Plymouth) on Sundays (takes 20 hours)

P&O Ferries:

  • Takes passengers to Bilbao (via Portsmouth) until 27 September
  • Departs at 9.15pm for a 2-day cruise. Expect to arrive at around 8am

Trains:

  • Eurostar trains: London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord, then an overnight Tren hotel train from Paris Gare d'Austerlitz to either Madrid or Barcelona
  • AVE high-speed rail network: Madrid or Barcelona to the Spanish city of your choice.
