How Much Am I Allowed To Spend In Duty-Free?

Duty-free applies to foreign merchandise that is tax-free and aimed mainly at foreigners arriving in a country.

Duty-Free Items

Due to the fact that the spending allowance of most duty-free shops differs from country to country, there is no standard amount that you are allowed to spend at a duty-free shop. Instead, the amount you can spend is measured by the amount of merchandise you purchase.

Currently, in the EU, you can purchase the following items:

  • 3200 cigarettes
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 10 litres of spirits
  • 3 kg of smoking tobacco
  • 20 litres of fortified wine e.g. port or sherry
  • 110 litres of beer
  • 90 litres of wine
  • 200 cigars

When travelling outside the EU, the following can be bought at duty-free stores, provided that you do not intend to sell them:

  • 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
  • 1 litre of spirits, or strong liqueurs over 22% volume, or 2 litres of fortified wine, sparkling wine or other liqueurs
  • 4 litres of still table wine
  • 60cc/ml of perfume
  • 16 litres of beer
  • £390 worth of all other goods including gifts and souvenirs

Keep in mind that this policy differs from country to country, so make sure you confirm what the spending limit is with regard to duty-free stores in the country you are visiting.
