What is My Duty-Free Allowance?

Your duty-free allowance is the value of the purchases that you can bring into a country without having to pay duty (travel tax). Should you have made purchases in excess of the allowed amounts, you may still bring them into the UK. However, tax will have to be paid on the excess items.

EU Duty-Free Allowances

Travellers flying within the EU are allowed duty-free goods to the value of £390 . However, you do not have to pay any duty on goods bought within the EU if the tax was included in the price when you purchased them.

The following quantities of alcohol and tobacco are also allowed duty-free:

  • Alcohol: 90 litres of wine, 110 litres of beer, 10 litres of spirits (above 22% alc/vol) and 20 litres of fortified wine
  • Tobacco: 3200 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos, 200 cigars, or 3kg of tobacco

If You're Returning From A Non-EU Country:

You can bring goods to the value of £390 into the country without paying duty on these items. This amount includes any clothing, electrical goods, perfume or souvenirs you have purchased. However, this allowance is less for those arriving in the UK by private jet, yacht, or another type of pleasure boat. Total allowances in these situations are £270 per person.

The following quantities of alcohol, tobacco and perfume are also allowed duty-free:

  • Alcohol: 4 litres of wine, 16 litres of beer, one litre of spirits or liqueurs over 22% alc/vol, and 2 litres of fortified wine (port / sherry), sparkling wine, or other liqueurs. These quantities are interchangeable, i.e. travellers may return with 1.5 litres of spirits and 1.5 litres sparkling wine without paying duty
  • Tobacco: The same flexibility is allowed for tobacco products, enabling travellers to buy a mixture of cigarettes, cigars and rolling tobacco, provided the total falls within the limits of 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars or 250g tobacco
  • Perfume: 60ml
