Can I Wear Skirts In Saudi Arabia?
Unlike many of its neighbours, Saudi Arabia is very strict in enforcing Islamic law, and female travellers from western countries will find themselves with many restrictions. The code of morality should be strictly observed by foreigners and this includes abiding by the appropriate dress code for both men and women.
Women, whether Saudi or foreign, are not allowed to wear short skirts, or anything revealing, and are required by Saudi law to always wear the abaya - a long and loose black robe. Non-Saudi women are permitted to go without a headscarf, but this might lead to unnecessary run-ins with religious police and unwanted attention from local men.
Non-compliance with the law can result in punishment or deportation, so we suggest that visitors to Saudi Arabia obey the local customs and traditions to ensure smooth travels.
